Giving to Biology & Wildlife
The purpose of this fund is to provide direct support for the Department of Biology & Wildlife at the 海角论坛.
The BioCares fund is established to provide financial support for graduate students
and staff members of the Department of Biology and Wildlife and Institute of Arctic
Biology. Its purpose is to alleviate the burden of unanticipated expenses, such as
an emergency medical or dental bill, travel in response to a family medical emergency,
or emergency housing displacement that fall beyond the scope of one鈥檚 personal resources.
Applicants may request up to $2,000, as funds allow, for themselves or another IAB/Dept.
of Biology & Wildlife graduate student or staff member. Requests should be made within
three months that expenses were incurred.
The Betty A. Anderson Memorial for Avian was established to provide awards to students who show an interest in avian studies, particularly those which mirror Betty's passions and professional interests including basic natural history, behavior, application of techniques to monitor rare birds, and impact assessment due to industrial development and climate change, etc.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate student attending the University of Alaska 海角论坛
- Be in a degree program in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM)
- Demonstrate motivation and academic and leadership potential
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or better
Preference will be given to students who are members or participants in scientific organizations, such as Alaska Women in Science or the Wildlife Society.
The Phillip Andrews Memorial Award was created to provide supplementary support to graduate students at the 海角论坛 studying terrestrial wildlife ecology. The fund was established in remembrance of Phillip Andrews, who received his M.S. in wildlife biology from UAF in 2019. Phillip was a humble person with an infectious sense of humor. He was committed to the conservation of Alaskan wildlife, with a particular interest in species about which little is known and that have received little attention from wildlife management agencies.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student in the M.S. Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program at the Department at 海角论坛
- Have a GPA greater than 3.0
- Be in good academic standing
Preference will be given to students studying lesser-known species. Funds may be used for tuition and other educational expenses related to the student's degree program, including research supplies, equipment, transportation, or software.
The purpose of the Ann Cook Undergraduate Student Scholarship is to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in biology, wildlife biology, pre-medicine, marine science, or biology working towards the veterinary medicine program at the University of Alaska 海角论坛.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student in the undergraduate program in the Department of Biology & Wildlife at 海角论坛
- Be in biology, wildlife biology, pre-medicine, marine science, or biology working towards the veterinary medicine program
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic/leadership potential
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
The purpose of the Croxton Family Fellowship endowment is to provide support to graduate students at the 海角论坛 who demonstrate academic skills and leadership abilities and whose academic program or research emphasis is in one or more of the broad areas of anthropology, Northern studies, biology, wildlife management, elementary or secondary education, the fine arts, or museum education and/or museum collection-based research in archaeology, ethnology or history. The intent of this fund is to increase the body of knowledge about Alaska, and to train professionals who will contribute to Alaska and its people.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time graduate student pursuing a degree at 海角论坛
- Be conducting research involving one of the academic areas enumerated above.
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students whose studies focus on Interior, Western and Arctic AK with emphasis on the people of these regions, including their relationship to the environment.
The family and friends of David 鈥淏urney鈥 Dunn established a scholarship fund in his memory following his tragic death in 1994. Burney was a graduate student in wildlife biology and did his research on the relationships of lynx, hares, and habitat on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Southcentral Alaska. Burney had a long-term interest in conservation education and in dealing with the public, especially youth, in regard to conservation issues. He had a strong interest in working with less fortunate people in urban environments and intended to work in this area following completion of his graduate work. In establishing the David Burnett Dunn Memorial Award, it was the desire of the family that funds be awarded to a graduate student with similar interests in wildlife biology and ecology but also with interests in broader societal issues and community affairs.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time graduate or undergraduate student in the Biology and Wildlife Department at 海角论坛
- Be in good academic standing
- Be conducting or planning to conduct a field study on an Alaskan wildlife population
- Have accrued a strong record of academic achievement in biology or wildlife biology
- Have a record of involvement in social issues
Funds may be used for expenses related to field research, including transportation, supplies, equipment, software, or to pay an undergraduate technician. If the latter, applicants are encouraged to employ a freshman majoring in Wildlife Biology and Conservation or Biological Sciences, and who comes from an urban environment.
The purpose of the Fayer Family Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to students majoring in Biological Sciences at the 海角论坛.

- Be a part-time or full-time student pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences at University of Alaska 海角论坛
- Demonstrate financial need
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic/leadership potential
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
The purpose of the Carol Feist Memorial Award for Undergraduate Biology is to provide funds to support the study of Biology at the 海角论坛. Authorized expenditures may be used (but are not limited to) to provide awards to encourage undergraduate research in biology and to honor undergraduate students, majoring in biology or related fields, who show outstanding promise, enthusiasm, and scholarship.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biology at the 海角论坛
- Demonstrate motivation, enthusiasm, scholarship, and promise in biological research
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
The Erich Follmann Memorial Student Research Fund was established to provide supplementary support to graduate students at the 海角论坛 studying carnivores in the Arctic. The fund was established in memory of professor and wildlife biologist Erich Follmann following his death in 2010.
To be eligible, a student must be:
- A graduate or undergraduate student enrolled part-time or full-time at the University of Alaska 海角论坛
- conducting primary research specifically on a carnivore in the Arctic. Research on fish, whales, seals, and walrus may also be included as they may be considered carnivores
- Conducting research on wildlife ecology or wildlife habitats
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
This support is intended to assist in the extra incidentals associated with research: for example, helicopter costs and other travel, radio collars, travel to present, etc. Expenditures from this fund may include, but are not limited to, awards, travel, equipment, contractual services, commodities, representational, and non-representational expenditures.
The purpose of the John B. and Mae M. Hakala Scholarship is to provide a general scholarship for undergraduate students pursuing a degree at the 海角论坛 in Natural Resources Management (forestry option), Wildlife Biology, or Biological Sciences, or pursuing a career in nursing.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate student at 海角论坛 (If going into nursing part time is accepted.)
- Be pursuing a degree in Natural Resources Management (forestry option), Wildlife Biology, or Biological Sciences, or a career in nursing
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic and leadership potential
- Be in good academic standing
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students who are Alaska residents.
The purpose of the Jay Hammond Scholarship is to enhance the wildlife program at the 海角论坛, through direct assistance to students and through enrichment of research and instructional experiences of students but are not limited to the support of visiting guest lectures, faculty seminars and field research.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be enrolled, or intending to enroll, as a part-time student in the Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program at 海角论坛
- Be pursuing or intending to pursue a degree in wildlife biology or management (preferred), or a degree in natural resources management or biology with a demonstrated interest in wildlife conservation.
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic/leadership potential
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in wildlife biology or management. In the case of students essentially equal in all qualifications, preference may be given to those students who intend to pursue a career in Alaska or Northern Canada.
Following his death in 1985 in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the family and friends of Randy Howenstein established the Randy Howenstein Memorial Field Research Fund in his memory to support travel and field research for biology students with an emphasis on botany.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time graduate or undergraduate student in the Biology and Wildlife Department at 海角论坛
- Be conducting or planning to conduct a field research project
- Be in good academic standing
Preference will be given to students studying botany. Funds may be used for expenses related to travel and field research, including transportation, supplies, equipment, software, or to pay for an undergraduate technician.
The Nicholas F. Hughes Memorial Endowment was established in memory of Dr. Nicholas F. Hughes, a fisheries biologist who served on the UAF faculty from 1998 to 2006. Dr. Hughes made extensive contributions to the scientific knowledge of stream ecology and salmonid biology until his death in 2009. The endowment was established by friends and relatives of Dr. Hughes to honor his memory and to assist students studying aquatic ecology.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time graduate or undergraduate student at the 海角论坛 with a focus in aquatic biology or fisheries (full time enrollment for a graduate student is at least 9 credits; for an undergraduate at least 12 credits; the credits apply to the the semester the grant is received)
- Have a strong record of academic achievement in biology, fisheries, or a related discipline
- Be in good academic standing
Preference will be given to students who are conducting research in fish ecology or other aspects of aquatic biology. As well as preference to those who can relate their research to Dr. Hughes鈥 former scientific contributions. Funds may be used for expenses related to research, tuition, fees, or living expenses. Research expenses may include supplies, equipment, software, transportation, or to pay an undergraduate technician.
The purpose of the Dr. Gary Laursen Fellowship in Mycology and the Biological Sciences is to provide fellowships to UAF undergraduate and graduate students who are studying mycology in the full or part time undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Alaska 海角论坛 who are enrolled in the Department of Biology and Wildlife/Institute of Arctic Biology, and who are studying the Biological Sciences with a preference for those in the field of mycology.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full or part time undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Alaska 海角论坛 who are enrolled in the Department of Biology and Wildlife/Institute of Arctic Biology, studying the Biological Sciences.
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students in the field of Mycology.
Calvin J. Lensink was one of the first graduate students in Wildlife Management at the 海角论坛 (M.S. 1953). He studied martens in Alaska for his M.S. thesis and Alaska sea otters for his Ph.D. (Purdue University 1962). Dr. Lensink remained in Alaska as both a field biologist and an administrator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He published numerous reports and peer-reviewed articles on marine mammals, shorebirds, waterfowl, and terrestrial mammals during more than 40 years of professional activity. The Calvin J. Lensink Fund continues his legacy by supporting graduate education and research in wildlife ecology and management at UAF.

- In good academic standing
Preference will be given to students whose work applies biology to the stewardship of wild populations of vertebrate animals and those who have not received a Lensink award in the past. Funds may be used for salary and benefits (maximum 360 hour per semester), supplies, services, and travel related to his or her thesis project. Expenditures from this fund may include, but are not limited to: equipment, salaries, stipends, scholarships, fellowships, awards, travel, contractual services, commodities, representational and non-representational expenditures.
The purpose of the Spencer A. Linderman Memorial Award is to annually honor the outstanding senior or graduate student majoring in the field(s) of Wildlife Biology and/or Management at the 海角论坛.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time undergraduate student in the senior year at University
of Alaska 海角论坛
Award will be based on academic achievements at the University - Be an outstanding Biology & Wildlife awardee
- Be in good academic standing
The Jack R. Luick Memorial Travel Fund was established to provide travel awards to graduate students studying the nutritional and physiological ecology of ungulates.
To be eligible a student must:
- Be a graduate student enrolled part-time or full-time at UAF
- Study the nutritional or physiological ecology of ungulates
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic and leadership potential.
- Be in good academic standing
Preference will be given to students applying for support to present their work at international conferences.
The purpose of the John F. Marooney Memorial Scholarship is to assist graduate students majoring in Wildlife Management enrolled at the 海角论坛, in John F. Marooney鈥檚 name.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student in the MS Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program at 海角论坛
- Be committed to wildlife habitat preservation
- Demonstrate superior motivation, and academic performance
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students who intend to remain in Alaska after completion of their degree.
The purpose of the Earl Maxwell Memorial Scholarship is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the biological sciences with a preference for those with a biomedical concentration.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time graduate or undergraduate student in the Biological Sciences program with a concentration in biomedical science at 海角论坛 (full time enrollment for a graduate student is at least 9 credits; for an undergraduate at least 12 credits; the credits apply to the the semester the scholarship is received)
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic/leadership potential
- Be in good academic standing
- Have a GPA of 3.5 Incoming/3.75 Continuing
Preference will be given to students who are Alaska residents.
The Ted McHenry Biology Field Research Fund was established to further biological field research by providing support for graduate students at the University of Alaska 海角论坛 with the prospect of achieving a better understanding of species that occur in Alaska's Copper River Basin. Ted McHenry, an outdoorsman and 1967 graduate of UAF, worked as a sport fish biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game until his retirement in 1987. He died in 1997.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a graduate student attending the 海角论坛
- Be registered for at least 5 credits during the semester the award is made
- Be studying the biology of animals, plants or cryptograms
- Be in good academic standing
- Demonstrate the potential for academic excellence and leadership
Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated interest in and potential for a career in field biology. Preference will be given to research in Alaska on species that occur in the Copper River Basin and to studies of less well-known species (animals, plants, and microflora). Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a solid grounding in the scientific method and are competent living and working in Alaska's outdoors. Funds can be used not only for tuition, fees, and living expenses but also for equipment, communications, travel, or other necessary expenses for field studies.
The Murie Memorial Student Award was established to honor three Alaskan pioneers: Olaus Murie, who was the first wildlife biologist to undertake comprehensive studies of Alaska鈥檚 caribou; his spouse, conservationist Margaret 鈥淢ardy鈥 Murie, who was instrumental in the passage of the Wilderness Act; and his brother, the naturalist and author Adolph Murie, who pioneered field research on wolves and other mammals in the Arctic. The purpose of the award is to provide support to students studying caribou or wildlife ecology, with a strong emphasis on wildlife habitats.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled part-time or full-time at the University of Alaska 海角论坛
- Be in good academic standing
- Be conducting research on wildlife ecology or wildlife habitats
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students studying caribou.
The purpose of the Alvin G. Ott Fish and Wildlife Scholarship is to assist graduate and undergraduate students who have expressed interest in fish and wildlife population and/or habitat management preferably from the perspective of working with major development projects in Alaska.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at 海角论坛 (full time enrollment for a graduate student is at least 9 credits; for an undergraduate at least 12 credits; the credits apply to the the semester the grant is received)
- Be majoring in a field related to fish and wildlife.
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
The purpose of the Clarence J. Rhode Scholarship is to provide scholarship support to encourage study in the field of fish and wildlife conservation. Rhode served as the Regional Director of Alaska for the US Fish and Wildlife Service after WWII and institutionalized airplanes as a key tool of the service.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student in the Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program or Fisheries Program at 海角论坛
- Be in the junior or senior year of an undergraduate degree program or in a graduate program.
- Have an emphasis in conservation.
- Recipient鈥檚 depth of interest in this field of study shall be a criterion for this scholarship
- Demonstrate motivation and academic/leadership potential
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students with financial need.
The Druska Carr Schaible Memorial Scholarship is in memory of Druska Carr Schaible, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska from 1945-1957 and the first Head of the Department of Biological Sciences. She was the wife of Dr. Arthur J. Schaible, but lost her life in the November 1975 Lathrop Building fire.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be an undergraduate student majoring in biological sciences at the University of Alaska 海角论坛
- Be in good academic standing
- Be an outstanding Biology & Wildlife awardee
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
The purpose of the Jim Stelmock Memorial Scholarship is to assist graduate students in terrestrial wildlife biology and management who have significant need of financial support and have a high likelihood of completing their degree programs.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time graduate student at 海角论坛
- Be majoring in the field of wildlife biology and/or management (excluding fisheries) at UAF
- Have demonstrated high motivation, strong potential for contributing to the field, a strong record of accomplishment and high likelihood of completing their degree program
- Demonstrate clear evidence of financial need
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
The purpose of the Rev. Dr. Bob and Dr. Sharon Swope Scholarship is to provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in health science, science education or science reporting. Appropriate majors include emergency services, justice, journalism, biology, nursing, chemistry and education.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time or part-time student attending the 海角论坛.
- Be in good academic standing.
- Be pursuing a career in health sciences, science education, or science reporting. Examples of appropriate majors are emergency services, justice, journalism, biology, nursing, chemistry, or education.
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic and leadership potential.
Preference will be given to students pursuing careers in emergency medicine, research
or education and
demonstrated a commitment to community service.
The purpose of the Lowell Thomas Jr. Scholarship is to assist undergraduate or graduate students.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time student at 海角论坛
- Have an interest in the management of natural resources or the environment
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students who are Alaska residents and those who demonstrate financial need.
The purpose of the Rex Thomas Memorial Award is to provide financial support for a Junior or Senior specializing in the area of wildlife biology (outdoor/field) who has, among other things, demonstrated potential for contributing to his chosen field or endeavor.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a part-time or full-time student pursuing a B.S. degree in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at 海角论坛, in the junior or senior year
- Have demonstrated potential for contributing to his/her chosen field through extracurricular activities within the local community or state
- Be an all-around, versatile person, with a breadth of interests and good rapport with peers and more senior colleagues
- Have a field of interest generally in the area of wildland, 鈥渙utdoor鈥 biology (e.g. ecology, animal behavior, natural history, conservation, wildlife biology or management fisheries biology or management)
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
Students who have received this award previously are no longer eligible to apply.
The purpose of the Richard K. Woodward, M.D. Endowment Scholarship for Biological Sciences is to provide scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in Biological Sciences at the 海角论坛.
To be eligible, a student must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences at University of Alaska 海角论坛
- Demonstrate financial need
- Demonstrate motivation, and academic/leadership potential
- Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Preference will be given to students who are residents of Interior and northern Alaska; second preference to rural areas of Alaska; last preference to the Anchorage area.
